With 28 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the US, it’s likely that you’ve either experienced the infection yourself or you know someone who has. Both possibilities are critical considerations when you return to the gym. Any time you’ve been away from the gym for a while, and particularly if an illness or medical condition factored into your absence, don’t rush it.
Take your time as you ease yourself back into your regular routine. Also, be sure to consult with your doctor or medical provider. Make sure you’re not overdoing it, but also check to see if you should avoid certain strenuous exercises. If you were diagnosed with COVID-19, you’ll need to be aware of possible respiratory and cardiovascular side effects.
Health and medical advice recommend recovery of at least 10-14 days before resuming exercise. If myocarditis or arrhythmia are involved, wait for three-to-six months or as directed by your doctor before returning to the gym. Then, when you get back to the gym, start with light, aerobic exercise on an exercise bike or elliptical machine.
From that non-weight-bearing workout, you can progress at the rate that is best for you. You can determine that exercise progression with input from your doctor, medical provider, and/or your personal trainer. You may also need more recovery time between sets. Here are a few tips that should help you get back into a regular workout schedule.
· Eat foods that support your immune system.
· Scale back until you’re fully up-to-par.
· Try running slower or for shorter distances.
· Break up the workout to give yourself a chance to catch your breath.
· Stay hydrated.
Take care to follow the directions of your doctor and avoid overdoing your exercise schedule. If you take your time and work your way back up to a full exercise load, you’ll avoid injury. It’s also important to stay hydrated and nourished to avoid nausea, diarrhea, and other negative side effects. You should also consider the fitness club that you’ll be using when you start back to your regular fitness routine.
